Joker37 Posted August 21, 2011 Report Posted August 21, 2011 Is this true? I keep hearing this everywhere. If so, what are the root causes for the higher proportion of women to be on this planet than men? Thanks Quote
JMJones0424 Posted August 21, 2011 Report Posted August 21, 2011 Google is your friend. http://www.lmgtfy.com/?q=world+sex+ratio In humans the secondary sex ratio is commonly assumed to be 105 boys to 100 girls (which sometimes is shortened to "a ratio of 105"). In human societies, however, sex ratios at birth may be considerably skewed by natural reasons such as the age of mother at birth, and unnatural reasons such as sex-selective abortion. The CIA estimates that the current world wide sex ratio at birth is 107 boys to 100 girls. In 2010, the global sex ratio was 986 females per 1,000 males and tend to reduce to 984 in 2011. Jorge1907 Posted August 26, 2011 Report Posted August 26, 2011 The poster asked after the ratio of men vs. women, not the ratio of newborn. Whereas more female children are born than males, women outnumber men both in the US and globally. The differences in ratios for either are not profound. Speculation as to the why include differences in newborn and childhood survival, greater risk taking in males, wars (males are primary combatants). etc. Think I'd try US census numbers before 2nd hand data from a "wiki". JMJones0424 Posted August 26, 2011 Report Posted August 26, 2011 The poster asked after the ratio of men vs. women, not the ratio of newborn.Answered- In 2010, the global sex ratio was 986 females per 1,000 males and tend to reduce to 984 in 2011. Whereas more female children are born than malesDo you have a source, as the opposite is claimed by the sources quoted in the wiki article- CDC for the US and CIA World Factbook for worldwide stats women outnumber men both in the US and globally.Source? This claim is refuted by the World Factbook for total global population and every age group except over 65 globally. Wiki has it all summed up in an easily referenced table here, or, you can follow the links from that article to go to its sources. Think I'd try US census numbers before 2nd hand data from a "wiki". Then do so. However, the nice thing about wikipedia, especially in non-controversial topics such as this, is that the articles are referenced. You have provided no references for your claims, and your claims are refuted by reputable sources, including the one you said you'd try.http://www.census.gov/prod/cen2010/briefs/c2010br-03.pdfTable 2 shows that male/female ratio in the US in 2010 was greater than one from birth to 39 years of age. But, as you noted, the question was for worldwide stats, so I don't see why the US census would be an effective source. CraigD and Qfwfq 2 Quote

fahrquad Posted October 7, 2011 Report Posted October 7, 2011 Is this true?I keep hearing this everywhere. If so, what are the root causes for the higher proportion of women to be on this planet than men? Thanks The primary cause for there being more women than men is the higher rate of mortality among men. Accidental deaths and death in wars is much higher in males aged 16-25. The mortality rate drops off significantly from age 25-60, then starts to pick up again due to cancer and heart disease. The odds are that if you survive to 50 years of age, you will most likely make it to 80. Quote
