belovelife Posted September 19, 2011 Report Posted September 19, 2011 3 guys go to a motel and rent a room for the night, the clerk says its 30 each guy pays 10 bucks and go to their roomthe clerk, realizing the room was only 25 dollars, gives 5 dollars to a bellhop to refund the money the bellhop on the way to the room decides to keep 2 dollars and pay each person one dollar so each person having paid a total of 9 dollars while the bellhop has 2 why does this not calculate Quote
JMJones0424 Posted September 19, 2011 Report Posted September 19, 2011 so each person having paid a total of 9 dollars while the bellhop has 2 While technically correct, this statement is misleading and is what leads to the con/trick/deception/riddle. Each of three men paid nine dollars, totaling 27 dollars paid. Of that 27, two dollars was stolen by the bellhop. The two dollars is part of the 27 dollars, not in addition to. It is therefore incorrect to say they paid 27 dollars and the bellhop kept 2 making 29. Keep it easy...10x3=30 initial payment30-25=5 initial refund5-2=3 refund after bellhop removes his cut3/3=1 refund to each person10-1=9 final amount spent by each person9x3=27 total amount spent27-2=25 total amount spent MINUS bellhop's cut equals price of the room.
