I found this artcle interesting. It explains a mis-communication on the recently launched Mars probe "curiosity". The drill bits for the probe were not cleaned according NASA protocol. The second link is NASA's Planetary Protection Policy for contamination of bodies out in space and anything coming to the Earth.
