If so we might also have a good Defensive Weapon...Have you read Rocheworld, Sigurd? This 1982-1984 hard SF serial novel involves a powered lightsail system used to travel 5.9 lightyears, to the Barnard’s star system. On the title subject of Dyson spheres, and the related and more recent matrioshka brain idea, have you read Accelerando? Both are, IMHO, not only very enjoyable reads, but scientifically well-researched and plausible, yet in the case of Stross’s Accelerando, very wild and speculative. It’s a bit of a stretch, I think, to call any sort of gigantic space construction project, such as those necessary for a focused sunlight or solar powered laser powered lightsail system, to be described as “cheap” – though Stross makes an interesting case for the idea that profound, fundamental changes in the business concepts and practice might render our present day idea of cost fairly irrelevant.
