belovelife Posted March 18, 2012 Report Posted March 18, 2012 mediterranian sea if we closed the straits of gibratar and the suez canal and made a connecting water way between the two points for water travel, and the rest of the mediterranian seawas drained into the ocean for future land increase, how much would sea levels rise globally Quote
Deepwater6 Posted March 18, 2012 Report Posted March 18, 2012 http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-17400804 If these UK scientist are correct, the oceans are going to rise shortly anyway. Quote
Eclogite Posted March 19, 2012 Report Posted March 19, 2012 The area of the Mediterranean is 2.5 million square kmsThe average depth is 1500mThe area of the oceans is 362 millions square kms So the oceans would rise by 10m approximately. Quote
CraigD Posted March 19, 2012 Report Posted March 19, 2012 if we closed the straits of gibratar and the suez canal and made a connecting water way between the two points for water travel, and the rest of the mediterranian seawas drained into the ocean for future land increase, how much would sea levels rise globallyAbout 10 meters. The volume, surface area, and average depth of the Earth’s oceans are about 1,300,000,000 km3, 360,000,000 km2, and 3.1 km. The volume, area, and average depth of the Mediterranean are about 3,750,000 km3, 2,500,000 km2, and 1.5 km. Because the Mediterranean holds such a small fraction of the total ocean, you can get a reasonable approximation of the sea level rise, for the scenario you describe, BL, just by dividing 3750000 km3 / 360000000 km2, giving about 0.010 km = 10 m. You’d have to have some hellacious pumps and engines to power them, and the Nile and other rivers that empty into the Mediterranean wouldn’t be the same – though they’d make some spectacular 1+ km high fall series! What are you planning on doing with the Black Sea? PS: Eclogite beat me to the calculation - but not the witty banter :) Quote
belovelife Posted July 19, 2012 Author Report Posted July 19, 2012 i wonder how the world feels about this, what if we pumped it to the north pole and froze it, and build huge stacks of ice where it won't meltprobably to much work how about make artificial lakes, desalinate the water , and pump it in like in places where it is dessert like northern africa build a huge place for an artificial lake build it tall Quote
