CraigD Posted March 29, 2012 Report Posted March 29, 2012 Welcome to hypography, IK! :) Please feel free to start a topic in the introductions forum to tell us something about yourself. Many people I mean All World Say's 2012 is a end of the World but he don't know how its possible I want to know how 2012 is a end of the world ?The date 20 December 2012 is significant in that, as best various anthropologist historians have been able to determine, that is the date that the Mayan Long Count calendar (which is base 20 (vingesimal), except for the second least significant digit, which is base 18) will reach 13.0.0.0.0. There’s some uncertainty about how our standard Julian and the Long Count calendar truly relate, because when the Spanish conquered and pillaged the Mesoamerican people, no communications between the Mesoamericans who knew the Long Calendar date and their conquerors occurred before these people died, failing to pass the knowledge on, but most antropologists believe this standard is correct, if not to the day, at least to within a year. By this standard, the last time this calendar had 4 “0”s was 18 September 1618. As the world didn’t end on that date, most people who know about the Long Count calendar don’t see much sense in believe claims that it will on 20 Dec 2012, but various mystics, pseudoscientists, simply ill-informed people, apparently do, while many unscrupulous people intent on making money from these people at least claim to. how world ends ? and what happend on world's end i mean who came to earth if nobody on earth ?There’s lots of fiction describing the end of the world in 2012, but IMHO it’s just that, fiction, so shouldn’t be taken seriously, or especially paid for, other than as entertainment. Welcome to the forum. Most don't realize the Mayans based their predictions around a mechanical astronomical computer that is made of stone. The gears are huge compared to what we have today, still today we have problems with what is called "gear backlash." A German made cuckoo clock is not as accurate as a Swiss made watch because the larger the gear teeth, the less accurate is the movement. The Mayan computer could easily be off by hundreds of years. On top of that, it's like predicting solar flares. I've had some success with doing that, but not enough to say I have it nailed down, since I missed the one on March 7th. If the Mayans left out a factor, and likely they did, the accuracy will be even worse. It's true the solar system is a clockwork of cycles, no different to the engine in a car and an engine gives a variety of syptoms that indicate, for example, the timing is off because the car backfires. We are far wiser to assemble the puzzle of solar flares, magnetic pole inclination, tremors, tornadoes, hurricanes and volcanism to get an idea of whether the planet is about to "throw a rod" than to rely always on the "check engine" light that may be stuck either on or off. Of course if it was off and comes on and you know there are puddles of oil in the driveway, you just might want to look under the hood ;) Keep in mind that the Earth is like a used vehicle. Quote
CraigD Posted March 31, 2012 Report Posted March 31, 2012 Most don't realize the Mayans based their predictions around a mechanical astronomical computer that is made of stone. The gears are huge compared to what we have today ...I’ve never heard of a huge stone geared mechanical astronomical computer used by any Mesoamerican, pre-Columbian Maya or others. I’m aware that Greeks made some pretty elaborate mechanical astronomical computers before 100 BC, evidenced not only in various ancient documents, but by an actual example, the “Antikythera mechanism”, recovered in 1900 and recognized in 1902. As Greeks of the period of this device were accomplished metal-makers, the Antikythera mechanism was made of bronze, and compact enough to be portable, but as Mesoamericans up to the 1519-1521 Spanish conquests were not, it’s not unreasonable to imagine them making similar mechanisms out of huge stone gears. Further, as they were interested in calculating coincidences between dates of 2 commonly used calendars, the 365 day Haab’ “practical calendar”, and the 260 day Tzolk'in “ritual calendar”, (dates know as “calendar rounds”) and their arithmetic techniques were very clumsy for multiplication and division, a mechanical calculator to solve modular arithmetic problems like “solve for x: (A + x) mod 365 = A and (B + x) mod 260 = B” might have been useful, and not too hard to build. However, I’ve never heard of such a machine having been discovered, either mention of one in a pre-conquest document, or the archeological find of an actual device. What’s your source for your claim, Dr. C :QuestionM :Exclamati It’s well known and documented that Mesoamericans had solved the calendar round calculation (x = 18980 = 52 x 365), but to the best of my knowledge, they solved it the hard way, with laborious calculation using their arithmetic techniques. This is a bit off-topic, as Mayan calendar round calculations have little to nothing to do with the Long Count calendar famous for the 20 Dec 2012 “end of the world” date, because unlike the Haab’ and the Tzolk'in, which have repeating day-of-the-year dates, the Long Count is simply an open-ended count of days since 6 Sep 3114 BC (give or take a few days, years, or decades, if the archeological consensus on the exact LC-to-Julian correlation is wrong).
