Kevin41 Posted March 31, 2012 Report Posted March 31, 2012 Where would I start to learn astronomy and cosmology outside of classes? Any specific order I should follow in my research?Any good sites or videos? Thank you in advance,Kevin Quote
JMJones0424 Posted March 31, 2012 Report Posted March 31, 2012 I highly recommend Ned Wright's Cosmology Tutorial as a starting point. For (near) daily articles on the subject, I recommend Phil Plait's Bad Astronomy blog and Ethan Siegel's Starts with a Bang blog. Of course, I recommend diving through our many threads here too. Perhaps if you give a little more information on your education and ability/interest in math, we could give a better set of recommendations. Turtle 1 Quote

Good book to start with is "From Quarks to the Cosmos" by Leon Lederman & David Schramm. Stephen Hawking's "A Brief History of Time" Various field guides about astronomy, star catalogues, the universe, etc. Get a good non-working knowledge and a telescope, then go for the working knowledge.
