I don't think that many politicians will be switching their stance after the Conn. school shootings. The NRA has so much power these days. The lobby groups and political action commities they are involved in are very powerful. In addition the publics memory is short.

I haven't heard anything about the Colorado movie theater incident in some time now. So when legislation comes up early next year I'm not sure the same puplic support of today will be there. As of today a CNN poll said 52 percent of us want a ban on assault weapons. I don't think those numbers will be the same a few months from now after a NRA media blitz.

The judges on the Supreme Court have the difficult task of determining how our fore fathers would apply the constitution to our modern problems. There were no cell phones for the NSA to listen in on back then, no violent video games and no assault rifles with the present day capabilities.

I personnaly agree with many Mayors around the country who have been trying to get an assualt weapons ban inside city limits. I think that is reasonable and warranted considering the 15,000 city gun fatalities every year. I don't think you will be doing much hunting in New York city or the streets around the White House.

I'm hopeful for meaningful gun control laws, but I have my doubt's it will come about. Like Homer Simpson said when was turned away at the gun store for the three day waiting period. "Ahhhh, but I'm angry now"

I just read a very interesting article with respect to this (in french, a similar but older one in enqlish: here)

The US should do something in the same direction. In the article I read they also made a point that the Australian prime minister of that time (John Howard), was far from being left (friend of Bush...). This should be important to note by the voters in the US. Changing the law for gun control law, has nothing to do with traditions or political side, just with preventing massacres and death of innocent people...
