SaxonViolence Posted May 18, 2013 Report Posted May 18, 2013 (edited) Lets imagine a Planet much like Earth—but somewhat warmer—warm enough to be very uncomfortable to Humans except at the poles. Let us further imagine that at least one of the poles is covered by a solid land mass about the size of our present day Antarctica—or somewhat larger. It could even have a peninsula or two projecting far into the more "Temperate" zones if you'd like. {I've read that even our present day Antarctica would not be too extreme to support life in summer, even as it sits, if the white snow cover didn't radiate most of the Sun's radiation back into space.} Be that as it may. Assume a year, day, and axial tilt not too different from our own—or consider several alternatives, if you will. Remember, a world warmer than ours. Green things start growing less than halfway through spring and don't die out until rather late in the fall. Of course there would be three months of Midnight Sun, where plants should grow very rapidly. Summers are wet and sweltering—temps close to 120o at times. Winters would be cold—but shorter and nowhere near as cold as our Antarctic winters—maybe like Anchorage Alaska, or mid-lattitude Canadian Cities. Now the Question(s): Given my parameters—are there any observations that leap forward? Would the weather tend to be mild—or would huge thunderstorms, tornados and hurricanes be the order of the day? What sort of Creatures would you expect to "Evolve" there—for folks who believe in Evolution? How successful do you think humans would be in transferring Earth Plants and Animals, attempting to grow crops, etc.? What conditions would you expect to prevail in the zones closer to the Equator? Would they tend to be wet or dry? Could tree-like plants adapt to temperatures from 120o to 150o? Animals? Could people survive in the Tropics at all? Is there anything in my model that makes the whole scheme impossible? Saxon Violence BIG PS: Would the Planets seas be calm enough to be Navigable, or far too rough and/or unpredictable?
