MarcelloTruzzi Posted May 30, 2013 Report Posted May 30, 2013 At sea level, approximately how many keV muons pass through a meter squared size of earth per hour. Of course I can calculate the unit in a different amount if it is more convenient for you to express such a measure in smaller (centimeter, minutes, different units us standard vs metric) units. If possible, it would be useful to know how many muons of each type pass through a given area of the surface of the earth. For example, if it were expressed as a set such as: over an hour 100 muons of geV size pass, 20 muons of keV size, 8 muons of 10-90 keV pass, 5 muons of 120-400 keV pass etc. It is not necessary for you to calculate the earth curvature as it would seem to be of a small impact upon such calculations. Also, I understand that the amount of muons passing is not static and also varies according to where on earth you are located. If I failed to ask you an important question related to this or if I have missed considering an important factor feel free to let me know. Any comments would be appreciated, I’m trying to save the Earth. Thanks again for your help. B) Quote
phision Posted May 30, 2013 Report Posted May 30, 2013 I don't think muons pass through the earth, as they react quite readily with protons! Quote
MarcelloTruzzi Posted May 30, 2013 Author Report Posted May 30, 2013 I disagree. Cosmic rays are constantly pouring through you right now from all sides. Some undergo interaction and reaction to create short lived muons. Some with high energy some with low energy. However, I am a layman so I only know what I have researched so far. Surely someone somewhere has calculated of the amount of cosmic rays that reach earth, its surface or atmosphere and consequently how many muons are created per hour per meter? I don't think muons pass through the earth, as they react quite readily with protons! Quote
phision Posted May 30, 2013 Report Posted May 30, 2013 Do you want to know flux of Muon's on Earth created by cosmic_rays striking the atmosphere or the flux of Muon_neutrinos passing through the Earth? Quote
MarcelloTruzzi Posted June 4, 2013 Author Report Posted June 4, 2013 I want to know both. I saw on wiki that "About 10,000 muons reach every square meter of the earth's surface a minute. However, I don't know and haven't been able to find a breakdown of the spectrum of muon values. How many of the 10k are keV how many are geV? Or if I had a break down of say a bell cure of values of the mouons that reach the earth surface. Thanks. Do you want to know flux of Muon's on Earth created by cosmic_rays striking the atmosphere or the flux of Muon_neutrinos passing through the Earth? Quote
