This is wild stuff. I'm not sure walking up and haphazardly lighting off pockets of air that are venting is a good idea. At least until you idemtify them.

Turtle, You have knowledge of such events, who gets ownership rights of a new found island such as this? I know if it happend in Atlantic City they would already be drawing up plans to build a casino on it. :yay_jump: (just kidding)

Trey kewl! I suppose it belongs to Pakistan since it's within their coastal bounds. Since this island was precipitated by a quake that killed hundreds of people, I think such an event off Jersey shores would be viewed as yet another disaster rather than a boon. The authorities would probably have to spend money keeping people away.

BBC writer Ilyas Khan deserves razzies for failing to do some basic science reference checking when he wrote

Though they couldn't smell methane, they did put a match to the fissures from where the gas was oozing, and set it on fire.

No normal human can smell methane, even in high concentrations. As sources from Wikipedia to paper brochures from gas companies, and I’d hope most science buffs learned as young’uns, methane is odorless. For safety, gas supplies add small amount of stinky gases so that methane leaks can be smelled.

It’d be a short-lived and architecturally troubled building – as Khan’s article notes, offshore mud volcano islands are extraordinary, but not unknown, and are known to usually sink and have their loose material washed away in less than 9 months. Mud volcano’s that form inland, on the other hand, which rest on firmer ground and aren’t subject to submerged water erosion, can last “a long time”. How long, I’ve not been able to find, but I guess it’s several hundred, perhaps thousands, of years, but not hundreds of thousands.

So true Turtle, These BBC photos show some real devastation. Rescue efforts are limited due to the remote area. It also isn't getting much media attention for the same reason. It's a very sad situation for them.

The caption of one of the images at your link says:

The military -which has a heavy presence in the area because it is fighting a long-running separatist Baloch insurgency- was among the first to respond to the crisis.

If those ***-wipe teaparty reps in our Congress have their way, our military won't get paid next week. It's a very sad situation for us, in spite of media attention up the whazzoo. :soapbox:

Oh; and a second mud-volcano island due to the Pakistan quake has been reported. One more island surfaces of Makran coast

Another fairly large shake in the region. I'm not really sure what constitutes an after shock as opposed to a stand alone quake, but this event was very violent.

As far as the teaparty, they are the bane of my existence. Even mainstream GOPers think they are fanatical zealots. They have wasted so much time fighting over health care. They lost, get over it, start legislation on other issues facing the country. I don't think they even know what they are saying no to, they just know if something comes from Obama or the Dems they are going to say no to it.

The health care defunding is called stupid by sections of their own party. My daughter just turned 18 and will now be allowed to stay on my health insurance until she gets a job to get her own. My son has type 1 diabetes he will now be able to get insurance without worry of a pre-existing condition denial.

I often hear GOPers say they would keep certain elements of the new health care act, but I never hear what they would keep. Taking away the above referenced policy changes would be met with real anger from the public I hope.

Just got up so hadn't heard of the new quake. :mornincoffee: Geologists use the term 'aftershock' for quakes at the same location of a 'stand alone' quake, but of lesser magnitude. Quakes at a same location but having larger magnitudes following smaller are all together termed a 'swarm'. Here's a link to as USGS site I visit regularly. >> USGS Earthquakes Hazards Program Click on the map to use it, then click on the Gear symbol at upper right to to configure the sizes and time-interval you want to see. You can scroll & zoom the map, and clicking on the colored circles you get a detail window for individual quakes. You can sign up to receive text alerts if you want as well. The map is showing a 6.8 for the latest aftershock. (You can also turn on and off a text listing of recent quakes to the left of the map by clicking the 'lines' symbol in upper-right.)

May the extremists all suffer the worst possible disasters personally that require the government help they are so determined to eliminate.
