kowalskil Posted November 26, 2013 Report Posted November 26, 2013 Those who were interested in my earlier post about NOMA are invited to read the modified version of http://pages.csam.montclair.edu/~kowalski/theo/atheist.html The last sentence of this short essay is: “Unresolved conflicts in debates about God usually result from absence of agreements on what the word God stands for." SaxonViolence Posted December 6, 2013 Report Posted December 6, 2013 When you say that people can believe their Religion, but only privately and above all never proselytise... It is in effect saying that they can believe, but they must act at all times as if they did not really believe. I is a Logical and Moral absurdity to believe that Unbelievers are headed for Damnation and that God commands the Faithful to warn them, but we must forbear because of Social Niceties. By the way: Technically "Atheist" refers to a person Philosophically Convinced that God is a Logical Impossibility in this or in any Conceivable Universe. And I don't suppose that it is mandatory, but most true Atheists are Evangelical—Meaning they try hard to convince others of their conviction. Incidentally : Technically an "Agnostic" is not only undecided whether or not God exists—but is also Philosophically Committed to the proposition that Certainty is Fundamentally Unachievable. Racoon Posted December 17, 2013 Report Posted December 17, 2013 (edited) So what are you saying Saxon? God does Not exist?? One doesn't have to be some Bible Thumper to think that somewhere beyond our Human Comprehension that there is some unexplainable Force.?? There is a Universe out there that Human Minds can't really comprehend. Edited December 17, 2013 by Racoon Quote
SaxonViolence Posted December 17, 2013 Report Posted December 17, 2013 I believe God Exists. I also believe that he is so many orders above human—in terms of power and intelligence—that he is not bound by human concepts of either Logic or Corporeality. I was pointing out that simply because someone chooses not to believe in God is not sufficient cause to label that someone an Atheist. The true Atheist believes that he has played out every conceivable variation of the God Argument in his head and that he has a forced mate no matter how you play it... As I said, he believes that God is a Logical Contradiction in this or any other possible Universe. Four or five years ago, I got into that argument and I found four or five Dictionary Definitions online that supported my Definition. Today, though I have a couple treasured Older Dictionaries at home, I can't find a single source online to prove my usage is the correct one. People are so determined to misuse the terms that even the Dictionary Definitions have been changed. So yeah, I might agree with the Hard Core Atheist insofar as that God may very well be a Logical Contradiction in this or any other Conceivable Universe... But unlike the Atheist, I do not agree that this rules out his existence. It just makes him Deucedly hard to comprehend. Saxon Violence Quote
Moontanman Posted December 17, 2013 Report Posted December 17, 2013 Technically "Atheist" refers to a person Philosophically Convinced that God is a Logical Impossibility in this or in any Conceivable Universe. No Saxon you are misinformed, an atheist is someone who does't buy what theists are selling, You can be an agnostic atheist or gnostic atheist, you're suggesting all atheists are gnostic when in fact if you do not believe there is a god then you are an atheist, doesn't matter if you are sure or unsure unless you unequivocally believe then you are an atheist by definition. You can add agnostic or gnostic to that depending on the surety of your beliefs... Quote
