Am able to create a spectrum with my narrow beam white light and a diffraction grating but felt it was too narrow for my project. Got a 1.25 inch equilateral triangular prism but no matter how I position prism I am not getting a spectrum. Is there a trick or a special position/angle that is needed to create a spectrum this way? Slit is about 1mm & distance to prism is about 7-8 mm.

Not that I'm aware of. However if you want the light to be spread out more you can try sending it through a second prism.

You did not state how far away from the prism you were attempting to view the spectrum.
