I do miss him and hope all is well with him. Maybe he will be the one to find the meteorite. :) Quote
Mars1 Posted April 5, 2014 Report Posted April 5, 2014 Wow that is really cool! A little scary too to think they could have been hit.by those rocks. If they were coming from space they would be moving at an incredible speed and would have caused a lot of damage to them or their parachutes. He is lucky. Quote
Turtle Posted April 5, 2014 Report Posted April 5, 2014 Wow that is really cool! A little scary too to think they could have been hit.by those rocks. If they were coming from space they would be moving at an incredible speed and would have caused a lot of damage to them or their parachutes. He is lucky. Just to clarify, it was just 1 rock. The still picture is a composite made up of individual frames taken from the video. As explained in the video and article, the meteorite has slowed way way way down from its speed in space. The average speed of asteroids/meteoroids in space is 25 kilometers per second, or approx. 56,000 mph. Investigators estimated the speed of the meteorite as it passed the skydiver at 300 kilometers per hour, or 186 miles per hour. Earth's atmospheric drag is responsible for the slow down. Doubly lucky fo shizzle. Once for not being 'cut in half' as they so colorfully put it in the video interview, and once again for inadvertently capturing it on video. Buffy 1 Quote
