Abe40 Posted April 8, 2014 Report Posted April 8, 2014 I need to ask the question: if the study of ethics is universal, why does ethical behaviour vary so much from one society to another, from one political system to another? Quote
Buffy Posted April 9, 2014 Report Posted April 9, 2014 Every society has different values. Different values lead to different "ethics" being judged "best." These differences mostly have to do with *culture*, than anything else. This in fact has very little to do with political systems, as evinced by the large differences in ethics you'll see in countries--and even within states in the same country--that have the same political systems. Your main thesis is fairly vague though, and I get the feeling there is a lower level comparison you're trying to draw out here. Please proceed. Ethics is not definable, is not implementable, because it is not conscious; it involves not only our thinking, but also our feeling, :phones:Buffy Quote
ErlyRisa Posted April 9, 2014 Report Posted April 9, 2014 Do chess peices ask if it's ethical to take out the queen before a check mate? Rules? Ethics is governed by the environment, and throttled by dominance. Is it ethical, to have won a chess game against yourself, when you are your own player? - who cares? If someone is wathcing you play yourself? If your playing another chimp: Your dominant, and therfore teach...is it ethical to teach a Chimp chess? If it's a person on par (aka mirror)...it is supposed to be fun. , and a break from the norm, could also be "fun" to one of the members of the game.If it's a computer : Now you are the chimp. cal Posted April 14, 2014 Report Posted April 14, 2014 (edited) Ethics is only half (50%) logical argumentation; to say it is "right" or "wrong" to do something is to say it is logical or illogical, as ethics is logic based and morality is belief based. The other half most people ignore is the implication an action has on liberty. When people are asking if it is right or wrong to do something, they are asking about the other players in the game. If it effects the other players, even in a positive way, it's still unethical to commit that action because you are infringing on their liberty. There has to be mutual agreement between the players in order to stop from infringing on their liberty (making you "at liberty" to commit the action). So that being said, ethics varies very little, but morality and what a people desire varies greatly. Edited April 15, 2014 by Snax sanctus 1 Quote
arissa Posted April 14, 2014 Report Posted April 14, 2014 If we were all the same, we would be boring. Just because we all may believe in certain same things does not mean we will act the same to get to the end result. Our paths just might be different. Quote
RainMan Posted April 15, 2014 Report Posted April 15, 2014 And that's what makes life interesting. Even in the same society where the ethics of two different people are roughly the same, two very different paths can be taken to the same destination. Quote
ErlyRisa Posted April 15, 2014 Report Posted April 15, 2014 Hmm, if only you could figure out the destination - and its piont, without having to deal with rules along the way... welcome QM computing. Quote
