I almost choked on my coffee this morning when I came across a news story on the internet about a teenage boy who died from an overdose of caffeine.

Apparently you can buy pure caffeine powder online -- something I never heard of. According to the article, just one teaspoon of the stuff equals the caffeine found in 50 Red Bulls and if taken all at once results in cardiac arrhythmia and seizures, which is what happened to this kid.

Oy vey!

Yes. Infact I drink juice mixed with powdered caffiene instead of coffee for better measurements, its also much cheaper.

Caffiene acts as an andosine inhibter, andosine is sort of as the brake that slows down your heart rate, so by inhibiting that, the curious child heart was beating too fast.

Well Greg,

he must have drank the amount of caffiene of atleast 40 cups or so but volume wise its not much.

I have a bottle of caffiene which has avarege sized pills, at 200mg a pill, a spoonful could easily contain 10 grams, although frankly, that still shouldn't kill you.

I am not really shocked by this, it is part of the reason that many places are marketing to avoid having young kids get anywhere near caffeine or energy drinks. I don't drink coffee except maybe once or twice a year and I am sure as a parent if my teen starts drinking it I am going to freak out.

"All things are perfect in moderation"; a friend told me that once.  Pure caffeine would be freaking suicidal.  Even something like cinammon when ingested in its pure form with nothing else can lead to major health problems.

What I'm curious about is what was the rationale behind the behavior? I wonder what this kid was thinking. Did he think he was going to get high? Of course, now that he's dead, we'll never know.

That's a shame. I have a bag of caffeine that I use sparingly, everything should be taken in moderation even the things that seem so commonplace (caffeine for example).

I'm sure the kid thought that he was going to get some super caffeine rush, and instead found out that chemicals/drugs/supplements aren't toys and should be taken with
care and the proper due diligence in researching them and having correct knowledge regarding them.
