Rakan Posted July 26, 2014 Report Posted July 26, 2014 Hello everyone.I am a first year biology student and I am very interested in finding more about the origin of life. It is the question I asked myself and made me want to study biology. What I want from mates here in the community, is to tell me wich theories do they agree with most or find it most reasonable and what are their proves for the theories. Or at least lead me to some quality places where I can read about the theories.I also want to read about Darwin's theory. But can you lead me to the best place to read about his evolution theory and the proves he got, please..I have searched a llitle bit on the web but I don't know so many websites that are at a high quality, because I am still at my first year of studying. So haven't really found what I want as I want it. And thanks alot Quote
CraigD Posted July 26, 2014 Report Posted July 26, 2014 Welcome to hypography, Rakan! :) The origin of life and biological evolution are related, but distinct. Tthe origin of live involves hypotheses and theories about how the molecules that allow biological cells to replicate – RNA and DNA – came to exist. Biological evolution involves what they have done, in interaction with the environment, since. Being a biology student, I’m sure you know that a deep, or even an accurate, shallow, understanding of these subjects takes years of study and thought. The WWW can be an excellent resource in this study, but hard to navigate because of its overabundance of starting places. My advice – others may have different – is to start at the oldest major site, the TalkOrigins Archive. Not only does it present a refined overview of the subjects, including attendant social controversy, if has a good-quality list of other web sites. Though like most thoughtful people, I’ve wondered about the origin of life as long as I can remember, my interest was renewed and excited in 2007, when I read of Robert Shapiro’s idea that there were two dramatically different families of abiogenesis theories: “replicator first”, which is the prevailing family of theories, and the alternative “metabolism first”. We had this short thread on it back in 2007. I find it fun and educational to sketch the taxonomy of families of theories. Here’s a minimal sketch of origin of life theories: Ahmabeliever 1 Quote
Rakan Posted August 7, 2014 Author Report Posted August 7, 2014 Thank you very much CraigD.I am sorry I didn't reply in a long time. I appreciate your help and I hope we start a conversation about the topic soon. Quote
Ahmabeliever Posted August 31, 2014 Report Posted August 31, 2014 They recently discovered metabolic pathways arise out of 'nothing' - looks like the metabolism camp was right. My apologies I cannot find the link, was in the news very recently. Quote
Eclogite Posted September 2, 2014 Report Posted September 2, 2014 While I lean to metabolism first, I do not see this research as 'proving' the case. It simply falls into the category of suggestive. Is this what you were referring to? Quote
