Moontanman Posted January 6, 2015 Report Posted January 6, 2015 In this video it appears that an object detaches it's self from the main meteor and accelerates in the opposite direction with out leaving a vapor tail like the main object is doing.. https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=1597338447166606 Quote
Eclogite Posted January 7, 2015 Report Posted January 7, 2015 1. I don't think it accelerated in the opposite direction, it simply moved in the opposite direction.2. The size, composition and velocity of the detatched object may all have been different and therefore conditions not conducive to producing a visible vapour trail. Quote

I would think that the speeds involved anything would leave a vapor trail, especially something that was glowing white hot. I am have almost come to the conclusion it is a hoax, just too many anomalies... Quote
Eclogite Posted January 7, 2015 Report Posted January 7, 2015 There is insufficient information available to determine the speed. I suspect that you, like me, know very little of the detailed physics controlling the formation of vapour trails that are generated by objects entering the atmosphere rather than jet engines expelling particulates on which dew can condense. I cannot accept the contention, until shown sound scientific data to support it, that a vapour trail should form. Moontanman 1 Quote

I cannot accept the contention, until shown sound scientific data to support it, that a vapour trail should form. A lot of this speculation depends on speed, it could be as low as a jet liner and traveling less than mach one or it could be high in the stratosphere and traveling 25,000 mph. As you said just not enough data, i still think it's odd the glowing piece didn't leave a trail, I looked at several videos of meteors breaking up and in all of them the pieces left trails but all of those pieces followed the same trajectory as the parent body... Eclogite Posted January 8, 2015 Report Posted January 8, 2015 I certainly agree it is unusual, but it is only in the last decade or so that we have had the opportunity to capture examples like this. The explanation may turn out to be somewhere between mundane and really interesting.
