Moderation note: This post was split from How Long Until We Could Make A Real Sword Art Online (sao) Nerve Gear Type Device, because that long thread is being broken up into threads by subject to make them shorter and more readable.

This thread is for discussion of the practical business creating more immersive virtual reality, and speculation about the future of such business

Okay, how about we make this a real project? With teams and funds and stuff? Let's move this to a new website and start working out the biggest problems.

@deadlydoener What is your university?

Edit: Found this on the internet

It would be nice, if we could create some technology like the nervegear, because it's a completely new kind of technology and you can use it for many things. We could use it to help people in medicine, for example to control artifical legs and something like this, and (I think it's the most important thing :D) you can use it to simulate completely digital worlds, for playing, learning and living in.

Hello everybody! I have wanted to see a real FDVR for a long time now, and would be even more thrilled if I might be one of the people to help design it. I am currently pursuing a career in entertainment design, but have also researched this topic for some time. If you're still looking for a team to work on this with I would love to help out in any way I can. Let me know either on here or at themodernlonelypoet@gmail.com

Cheers!

It's all awesome that there's so much discussion about and that developing such system is closer than I originally thought before reading this topic, please keep in mind that there are some drawbacks.

1: We need a heck of a lot more than just a few neurologists and clever college graduates and some research that has been done already. For example, when the technology might be ready at some point, would the world be ready for it? Would governments allow this for personal use and wouldn't they manipulate people in even worse ways?

2: If something goes (horribly) wrong (for example what SAO actually shows us, people getting too much power), who will be held responsible? What will happen to the future of VR after that? In the world we live in, media is so one-sided and subjective sometimes (while it shouldn't be that way), will it be received and handled properly?

3: Even besides what I mentioned in number 2, we can only speculate at this very moment what the effects will be on a long period. But there might pop up some unwanted side-effects or problems that can't be reversed. Of course, that happens all the time. But this specific case would be so fragile, not only for the research, but also for the fate of humankind.

4: What about people with neurological diseases, such as Tourette Syndrom and Epilepsy? For example, I've got Tourettes and Autism. What would be the effects of this project on people like me? Would it medicinally be safe for us to participate in this project?

Now those thoughts come from a sixteen year old computer nerd, but I think there'll be some people out there that should consider these points and use them to guide this project into safety.

With all that pessimistic thoughts of me out of the way, I absolutely look forward to the day that this becomes reality. If I ever would be able to support this project, I'll be happy to do so. In fact, it was just recently that I've finished the first season of SAO. I would be so amazed to see this become real, and I really would want to use the final product of this project someday in the future.

There's only so much we already know about the brain, yet also so much we don't know...

Edit: forgot to mention it's absolutely okay to disagree with one or more points I've mentioned, but if you are, I would really want to know more about this kind of stuff.

I have much hope for our future, if a 16 yr. old, such as "computer1up" is an example of the knowledge, passion, and enthusiasm that permeates this generation. I have a niece with autism and she too is working on such projects. I hope for all of you the best.

Hello,

I'd just like to say hi and that I have been researching for a bit and I found a company called "SAO" and they have already started to make the NG apparently however they want to release it on the 6th of November 2022. which in my opinion is a bit stupid because if they had a group working on the NG they could finish it about late 2018 if they had loads of people working for them. In-addition to the addiction they wont be able to stop gamers from playing video games because its basically their lives, they work so hard to become the best and I personally don't think that the government would be able to stop them even if they tried to. Same for the NG I'll give it 1 month when it comes out till everyone I know, including me has one they would love it and b the way I know I havnt helped Much but I'm not a science person or a computer person I'm just a regular gamer :D

BTW here is the link http://www.indiedb.com/games/sword-art-online

This is getting more interesting by the moment. I like to think of myself as an older, maybe wiser, (in some respects) member of a group, of which I am a semi-retired Investigative Journalist, forming to create some new novelty. Ezra Pound, a famous writer said that his fellow writers ought to "Make something new..." when they write. I can't see what is more new than what is being discussed here.

So, if this group actually comes to fruition, I'd ask, may I have the "exclusive" on it, when you folks bring it to pass? Now I don't know if you all have seen the movie, Armageddon, with Bruce Willis, et. al., but I'd like to paraphrase a line in that movie, if I may: "I don't mean to be the financial weasel of this group, but can we get some hazard pay for this operation?" In other words, there needs to be some legal parameters set up for this as well. For now, it is simply discussion, but if a group actually comes together and creates this NG, I would definitely want to be in on the ground floor of its operations, in my capacity as the writer/promoter of this venture.

I would think that the administrators of this site have the exclusive rights, so Craig, what say you? lol

Hi guys ! I'm 15 y/o and I'm french.

My life's goal is to create a Nerve Gear. I know it'll be hard. But i'm motivated. I want to work on it because my dream is to make the experience of VR (SAO if possible). But, I don't know which kind of studies I have to follow. Can you help me ? I'm serious. It's my dream. I'd like to work with you !

Craig and Jacob I am Simply Commenting to say i look forward to a nerve gear being here shortly and I too have decided that would go to college specifically to learn exactly what to do and what is needed to create a nerve gear or amusphere gaming headset i hope one day ill get to meet you Jacob since you decided to do the same maybe we can work together on it in the future. Thank you Craig for your insight but i will dedicate my life to making this even if it doesn't turn up to be very popular. Once again Thank You guys. :1drink:

I too am going to college and looking to make this game for real in the future. I will be going to SCAD university and will be presenting the game idea to big companies like bungie, blizzard, and others. I will be going into graphic design and computer science. So if you ever need an extra person I am here.

But hey, I think we need to keep this conversation on track. After looking at all the posts again it seems that we're jumping all over the place. So I want to follow the idea that someone stated earlier about making a "master list" on what we need to start with. Since Craig, zazz, and a few other originals are posting the main areas of focus, I figured that the main contributors (and if appropriate, I'll even jump in if needed) collaborate and come up with a stepping stone such as figuring out how to control the image and control processing while in deep sleep (or REM sleep if you prefer!)

But hey, five2fly, since you suggested it: "So I want to follow the idea that someone stated earlier about making a "master list" on what we need to start." - yo the "man." You get to make the master list, or collaborate with those most knowledgeable on this subject, and who wish to be part of just such a collaboration. For my part, as stated earlier, I wish to write about what you guys actually come up with.

I don't have a problem, I have a general direction to look into regarding this subject. Does anyone disagree? Or the more knowledgeable people have any issues regarding this? Maybe they have a better suggestionon where to put our focus at.

But needless to say, I'll see what I can come up with, I don't want the list to come off as "half-assed".

Okay, just so you know, there's already a group of people making the SAO ( argus.forum-invision.com ), so I suggest you join them because they said they're making progress on the NG.

@Five2Fly are you quoting me there?
