Since the subject is “space and mankind”, how about exploring the question “all things considered are vehicles capable of reaching space good or bad for humankind?” (let’s excise a bit of sexism and use “human” in place of “man”)

On one hand, they could allow us to expand our species habitat beyond Earth, allowing our population size to be much greater than possible if we remain only on Earth, and survive longer than any previous species. On the other, they could be used annihilate a substantial fraction of our population in a few hours, causing the collapse of our science, culture, and civilization, hastening our extinction.

Would we have spacecraft now were it not for nations’ drive to win wars?
