robporter Posted April 29, 2016 Report Posted April 29, 2016 (edited) Hi, I was sent this meme (attached) and was wondering what it meant and how to argue against it... Is this guy who sent the meme talking about the phylogenetic tree? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phylogenetic_tree - Appreciate any help. Thanks. Edited April 29, 2016 by robporter Quote
exchemist Posted May 3, 2016 Report Posted May 3, 2016 It's based on a (probably deliberate) falsehood. Evolution is a theory of the origin of species, not biochemistry. While it's true that we think the biochemistry must have evolved in some way, the theory of evolution does not tell us how, because evolution presupposes the existence of replicating organisms that inherit traits from their predecessors. It can't, on its own, tell us how the first organism of this type appeared. So we have no "evolution tree for DNA". If, one day, we have a fully worked out theory of abiogenesis then I suppose we might have such a tree. but until then, not a chance. CraigD 1 Quote
