GAHD Posted June 27, 2005 Report Posted June 27, 2005 Heay Cedars, glad to have you join. What's your interest in ecology? Quote
Cedars Posted June 30, 2005 Author Report Posted June 30, 2005 Hello Gahd: My apologies for the delayed response. I didnt know you had posted to me until today. As far as what my interest in ecology is, I would have to define it as primarily focused on conservation issues and sustainable resource management. I am not anti-hunting but I am against, for example, in my state of minnesota, the answer to declining fish stocks in Leech Lake is "lets slaughter 4,000 cormorants" Now the DNR is applying for the special permits needed to kill a protected specie. My reaction is, maybe its people overfishing that has depleted fish stock, and maybe the real response should be people management. Another example is my yard. I mow very little of the whole, and each spring I watch for new plants to avoid mowing. Because of this approach to my yard, I have discovered a wealth of native plants and this has expanded the variety of life I have. Several types of plants which I mow around support caterpillers which need specific plants to feed from in this stage, to allow them to become butterflys and moths. Additionally, I allow "undesireable" plants to grow in some areas, which also support animals, such as walking sticks, tree frogs, and again, moths. I hope this answers your question. Quote
