fahrquad Posted October 30, 2016 Report Posted October 30, 2016 10,000 Japanese singing in German. I know it is Beethoven and I appreciate that, but the last time the Japanese and Germans got together things did not go well. https://youtu.be/xBlQZyTF_LY?t=491 Quote
fahrquad Posted October 30, 2016 Author Report Posted October 30, 2016 It is still one of Beethoven's greatest and most inspirational works. Quote
CraigD Posted October 30, 2016 Report Posted October 30, 2016 Plus the song’s about all men becoming brothers and giving the whole world a sensuous kiss, which is kinda the opposite of scary. Quote

DrKrettin Posted January 1, 2017 Report Posted January 1, 2017 I dunno, I find the idea of men giving their brothers a sensuous kiss a little creepy. That's a serious distortion of what Schiller wrote. He talks of nature giving us kisses and wine, and specifically mentions "Whoever has found a beloved wife". Quote
fahrquad Posted January 1, 2017 Author Report Posted January 1, 2017 Schiller obviously meant kisses in the metaphoric sense, but I was having a little fun with CraigD's post in #3. Quote
CraigD Posted January 2, 2017 Report Posted January 2, 2017 There are kisses 2 places in the poem, (English translation) “She gave us kisses and the fruit of the vine” around the middle, and “You millions, I embrace you / This kiss is for all the world!” The first kisses are clearly nice fruity one from mother nature to us, but I’m not sure who’s giving the whole world that last one. Could be an implied human narrator, or it could be God – I think I’ll leave this one for an expert. :) Either way, it’s pretty warm and fuzzy. Quote
