LaurieAG Posted December 28, 2017 Report Posted December 28, 2017 I saw this article yesterday and recalled seeing a similar video that explained the phenomenum.https://sciencealert.com/scientists-observe-bizarre-double-whirlpools-in-the-ocean-for-the-first-timeFor the first time, scientists have recorded a bizarre phenomenon in fluid dynamics, which up until now had only ever been theoretically predicted, but never observed in the wild. In the ocean, vast whirlpools called eddies span up to hundreds of kilometres across and are a relatively common event. But now researchers have observed these giant vortices swirling in tandem: two connected whirlpools spiralling in opposite directions. It really makes me wonder if the pair of whirlpools in the ocean was caused by something like a large round 'stone' skipping on the surface of the ocean at a low angle. In the pool video it looks like there is a direct relationship between the size of the plate and the distance between the vortices during their travels. Quote
