Turtle Posted February 11, 2009 Report Posted February 11, 2009 I have observed that the world has suffered far less from ignorance than from pretensions to knowledge. It is not skeptics or explorers, but fanatics and ideologues who menace decency and progress. No agnostic ever burned anyone at the stake or tortured a pagan, a heretic, or an unbeliever. ~ Daniel Boorstin Quote
Michaelangelica Posted February 13, 2009 Report Posted February 13, 2009 i like that Mr. T. I have sent it on though the ether. Funny I just found this quote after giving a $1 to the Royal Flying Doctor (I really can't even afford that!!) "It is the greatest of all mistakes to do nothing because you can only do a little. Do what you can." - Sydney Smith Quote
Michaelangelica Posted February 14, 2009 Report Posted February 14, 2009 What has been is what will be, and what has been done is what will be done; there is nothing new under the sun.Is there a thing of which it is said, “See, this is new”?It has already been, in the ages before us.The people of long ago are not remembered, nor will there be any remembranceof people yet to come by those who come after them.Ecclesiastes 1 : 2–11.urticator.net - Nothing New Under the Sun DougF 1 Quote

Michaelangelica Posted February 18, 2009 Report Posted February 18, 2009 Religion is not the opiate of the masses. It is the placebo of the masses.~ HouseTo me those sentences say differnt things. The first an addictive drug that takes you from reality, numbs you to any external stimuli.which is I think what Karl meant. It stops you from thinking about the realities and injustices of society. So you can offer up you pain, discomfort, poverty, exploitation to get a better spot in the "after-life". The second means it (religion) works, better than anything else we have, even if based on a sugar pill story. House scriptwriters being too clever by far? InfiniteNow Posted February 18, 2009 Report Posted February 18, 2009 The second means it (religion) works, better than anything else we have, even if based on a sugar pill story. House scriptwriters being too clever by far?I would have to call into question your definition of a placebo, Mike. It's not that it works "better" than other things, it's just that it works w/o any reason to other than psychological. I may get my body to heal a cut faster if I think that the sugar water I put on it is medicine, but that doesn't mean it works better than something like Neosporin in a controlled test. Either way, yes... I found that line from the House scriptwriters VERY clever, indeed.... which is why I posted it here. :teeth: ""Gotta let the phone ring more than four times when you're calling a cripple." Quote
