As I child, I would often ask, "what's that, daddy?"

 

His confident answer always reassured me that he was the smartest daddy in the world:

This expression is quite analogous to a differential equation describing the evolution of a many body system which, as anyone competent in physics knows, is not an easy thing to solve. What we would like to do is to reduce the number of arguments to something which can be handled: i.e., we want to know the nature of the equations which must be obeyed by a subset of those variables.
