Depending on the temperature of this backgound, the photons would have a wavelength corresponding to this temperature. Currently the background temperature is about 3 degrees absolute, A photon with this energy range in is the microwave part of the spectrum. At some point in the past the background radiation would have been in the infra-red range, then visible light, etc. Quote

The CMB represents the time when photons began to be able to travel freely. Prior to this, the physics of the universe did not allow for photons to be emmitted. Quote
