His thoughts were in line with some good principles, aside from this or that detail or choice. The important thing is for "We, the people" to mean that the people want it and agree with it, and I think this is the crux of the thread and its title. I could reply to the question Fish asked by saying that it's up to US citizens, whether you want the US Constitution exactly the way it is, or want to amend it in a detail or two, or replace it with a whole new one or not have a constitution at all. Jefferson certainly couldn't impose it on we the people, even less on those of centuries to come. Quote
