The second I quite judging the correctness of the spelling, I zipped right through it. Amazing Quote
alxian Posted August 6, 2005 Report Posted August 6, 2005 for it to work though you have to recognize the words in the first place before decoding them. you can't throw in too many words that don't occur in common converstion or people will not recognize them immediately ruining the experience. makes you wonder then of the millon or so words in the english language make up the working vocabulary of most people. that is how many words do most people immediately recognize. how do we store all of that information. Chacmool Posted August 12, 2005 Report Posted August 12, 2005 Spare a thought for proofreaders and editors - they must suppress this amazing ability in order to do their job. Quote
Turtle Posted August 12, 2005 Report Posted August 12, 2005 ___Perhaps a better term is "tune" the ability, rather than "suppress" it. I notoriously misspell words here, so I adopted the edit phrase "speelling airs". On reading the first post here, it looks like "speelling" fits the first/last letter mode, but "airs" is simply an entirely different word; a quasi-homophone.___Itt apeers that reeding werds rekwires sveral deekoding teckneeks. Fascinating. Quote
GAHD Posted August 12, 2005 Report Posted August 12, 2005 A similar thing some times happens with me. Because I know french & english, with a smattering of spanish, I can sometimes understand bits and peices of other latin-derived languages(Eg portugese), and can decode some latin despite never learning it. Anyone else have similar experiences? Quote
Turtle Posted August 12, 2005 Report Posted August 12, 2005 ___Yes, similar but by a different course. (pun) I took a course in highschool called Vocabulary Development that focussed heavily on Latin prefixes, suffixes, & roots, as well as some Greek & other languages. I have ever since kept the habit of adding to my list & "decoding" foreign words & making new words. I love wordsmithery. :) Quote

OpenMind5 Posted August 13, 2005 Report Posted August 13, 2005 Can't say I do. But I am VERY interested in learning Latin. Op5 Quote
