A Boat of Animals ?

Genesis 6:14-17 (KJV Bible)

"Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch. And this (is the fashion) which thou shalt make it (of): The length of the ark (shall be) three hundred cubits, the breadth of it fifty cubits, and the height of it thirty cubits. A window shalt thou make to the ark, and in a cubit shalt thou finish it above; and the door of the ark shalt thou set in the side thereof; (with) lower, second, and third (stories) shalt thou make it. And, behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth…"

During the translation into English there have been several words added so let's disregard them. To find the original Hebrew meanings of other possibly incorrectly translated words and added punctuation let's refer to Strong's Concordance. (Printed version, not amended electronic versions.)

8392 "ark" (of foreign origin) means 'a box' - and NOT boat.

1613 "gopher" comes from an unused root meaning 'to house in', but the exact meaning of the word is not known.

7064 "rooms" figuratively means 'chambers'.

3722 "pitch" means 'to cover'.

3724 "pitch" refers to a black coating (similar to bitumen).

6607 "door" means an 'opening' (as in a door that opens).

8482 "lower" means 'lowermost'.

8145 "second" means 'double'.

7992 "third" means 'a third part'.

The added words "with" and "stories" are not original Hebrew words.

"second, and third shalt thou make it" = 'double is made the third part'.

So, the Ark of Gopher Wood is a box (of foreign origin) made out of an unknown type of wood that is coated black on all surfaces, and is 300 x 50 x 30 cubits (L x B x H) with chambers and a window, above which the finishing is 1 cubit. It has an opening door in the lowermost side. This third part is made double.

The 'box' is 300 cubits in total length. (x + 2x = 300) If the third lowermost part is double the rest then it is 200 cubits, leaving 100 cubits for the window and the chambers. The "finishing above the window" refers to the thickness of this unknown black coated wood, and is 1 cubit thick.

Here is a scaled front elevation diagram.

The contents of this box are noted in the book of Numbers in several sections where certain groups of people were given responsibility for the various components. (See next post entitled - Contents of the Tabernacle Revealed in a few days time.)

how much is a cubit? in meteres or in feet if possible

See my "Contents of the Tabernacle Revealed" post.

RE: Cubit

Hebrew word 520 "cubit" means 'a unit of measure', and is a prolonged version of word 517 which when sounded gives 'em'. Prolonging this gives "em-em". A 'mm' is the abbreviation for a millimetre. So in the Bible a "cubit" refers to the metric system. It has been found that in Ezekiel (where he measures the temple) this unit is the basic 'millimetre'. However, in Exodus 25:10 it is a unit of 10 centimetres.

Here in Genesis it represents 1 centimetre.

So the box being described in the Old Testament (and depicted in the Ark of Gopher Wood post) was actually 300 cm x 50 cm x 30 cm. That's three metres long, half a metre wide, and 300 mm (about a foot) high.

nuclear fallout shelter anyone?

according to an impartial source... the internet

1 cubit = 45.72 centimeters

300x 45 3/4= 137.16 meters

50x ""= 22.86 meters

30x ""= 13.71 1/2 meters

makes for a good bomb shelter if not a boat.

if i was going to purge the world of infidel and miscreants it would the divine light of atomic discorporation would be my first choice.

or if the measurements are acurate

a casket?

did god have a sense of humour?

there are indications of nuclear events before our time. either natural ones or it could even be that we aren't the first nuclear capable civilizations.

thanks

Actually the cubit measure varies with time & location.

I ran across an interesting relation the other day that seems to relate the vesica piscis to human measure. Depending on which measure for the cubit you accept, the ratio of the short to long axis of the vesica piscis is one foot to one cubit.

For example, if you take a short axis of 1 foot as 12 inches, and multiply 12 * √3 = ~20.78, which is near the measure of the 'seven palm' cubit.

Besides varying measures for the cubit, the foot varied as well in the past. Here's some reading on the topic. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cubit
