Erasmus00 Posted August 13, 2005 Report Posted August 13, 2005 One of my favorite comfort food items has always been sloppy joes. maybe a pound of hamburger a small onion, chopped upa celery stalk, also chopped maybe two tablespoons worth of butter 1/2 cup bbq sauce (Dinosaur BBQ's honey garlic is ideal. http://www.dinosaurbarbque.com/)a lot of worchestershire sauce(1.5-2 tbs)1 tbs of chili powder1 tbs brown sugarand salt and pepper to taste. Sautee the onions and celery in the butter, then throw in everything else and cook for maybe 15 minutes untill it thickens up a bit. Eat it on hamburger buns if you like. -Will Turtle 1 Quote
Buffy Posted August 14, 2005 Author Report Posted August 14, 2005 Cracked Crab Go to the store and get one (or if you're a glutton for food and punishment, two) cracked and cleaned whole crab.Spend about 2 hours carefully extracting all of the crab from the shell and deposit it into one large bowl.Melt a half cup of butter and pour in a small bowlSpoon a half cup of mayonnaise and or tartar sauce in a small bowlPour a quarter to a half cup of hot or cocktail or both in a small bowl Gather one or two or three or four close friends around the table with the crab in the center along with the small bowls, and give everyone a small plate and a fork. Dig in with a side of Martini or Chardonnay. <peewee herman>Mmmmm, Crustaceany!</peewee herman>Buffy Quote
IrishEyes Posted August 16, 2005 Report Posted August 16, 2005 No diets for me, Buff. If I can't eat what I want, what the hell is the point? I mean, I'm in my mid-thirties (ouch! I actually admitted it!), I've actually given birth to 6 children, and I don't belong to a gym. But best of all, my sweet hubby still thinks I'm a 'hottie' (much to the dismay and frequent disgust of previously mentioned 6 kids :) ). I LOVE food. But even more than that, I LOVE to make food for other people. My dream used to be to own a B&B, but I think I may take my new friend Tim's cue, and opt for a Boat-and-breakfast instead. One of my favorite comfort foods is a drink. My best friend Kelly introduced me to her own version of coffee. It sounds kinda weird, but you really have to try it, especially on a stormy day, with the wind whipping around, and the kids all playing quietly, while you're snuggled under a huge blanket. Kelly's Koffee - Start with a freshly brewed pot of Hazelnut. Any brand will do, but I prefer to grind my own beans. And just a smidge more than you normally do, the smell is worth it.- Pour the steaming brew into a huge mug, 3/4 of the way to the top.- Add 2 or 3 splashes of your fave creamer. I prefer Hazelnut there as well. Actually Southern Butter Pecan is my favorite, but that clashes with the other stuff sometimes...- Dump in two heaping spoonfuls of powdered hot chocolate mix. The type with the tiny marshmallows is best.- Stir well, until all mix is dissolved.- Add a big squirt of whipped cream to the top.- Sprinkle with 'cinnimonnum'. the best of which comes from Cinnobun! Take one great big whiff, savor the smell, then sip to your heart's content. Be careful tough, it goes down a lot faster than you'd think. (For really cold days, substitute your choice of Bailey's or Kahlua for an extra warm treat) Enjoy!! Quote
Tormod Posted August 16, 2005 Report Posted August 16, 2005 But best of all, my sweet hubby still thinks I'm a 'hottie'... He's right. Quote

C1ay Posted August 17, 2005 Report Posted August 17, 2005 Tasty Snack: Peach JamApple JellyHorseradishCream CheeseCrackers (Ritz or Townhouse) Mix 3 to 4 parts of peach jam with 3 to 4 parts of apple jelly. Mix in 1 part horseradish to start.Spread cream cheese on crackers. Dip crackers in the jam/jelly/horseradish dip. Adjust horseradish to taste. I like mine with quite a bit of bite to it so I end up using 2 to 3 parts horseradish. I have also substituted apricot preserves for the peach jam. It's an addictive flavor that will keep guests guessing what it is  Quote
Buffy Posted August 17, 2005 Author Report Posted August 17, 2005 Oooooooh! That sounds gooood! I do a slightly different variation that's less work: Try just plain jalapeno or red pepper jelly (not always easy to find, but worth the hunt). Cheers,Buffy Quote
IrishEyes Posted August 17, 2005 Report Posted August 17, 2005 He's right. (oh, T! That's so sweet. I didn't think you noticed...) Look in the mirror sweetie... you're one too. :) Quote
IrishEyes Posted August 17, 2005 Report Posted August 17, 2005 And C1ay, that is one of my personal favorites! You have really great taste!! And they have the best Rep Pepper Jelly at the local berry farm here, Buffy. Of course, it's probably not as good as something you might find at Knox, but not bad for the East coast! Quote
IrishEyes Posted August 17, 2005 Report Posted August 17, 2005 Ok, my FAVORITE comfort food has got to be Warm Potato Salad. Cold or hot day, nothing beats it. Warm Potato Salad - Rough peel a 10 lb. bag of potatoes. By this I mean to get only about half the peel of each spud. The peel is actually the good part, and the kids won't gross out if some of it is gone.- Cut the potatoes into pieces. I prefer mine to be bigger, about apricot size. But you can cut 'em any size you want.- Dump the cut taters into a big pot. Cover them with water. Drain. Cover them with water again. Add two dashes of salt. Heat to boiling, then turn down to medium.- Cook them until they are fairly soft, but not mushy. I like mine best a little less done than mashed potatoes, but not so raw that they're still crunchy.- Drain off that water. DO NOT RINSE.- Add a medium chooped onion, a jar of pickle relish, three squirts of Ranch dressing, and a bunch of mayo. - Now add some mustard, your choice of flavor, but I like the dijon. Add some garlic salt, a shake or two will do.- Stir well, with a BIG spoon. Get it all mixed up really good. You can even use a potato masher if you want, I do sometimes. Sit down, and eat it with a spoon, right out of the pot. Seriously, get yourself a bowl before you put it on the table. I take this stuff to every potluck we do at church, and I have never taken a single bite of it home with me at the end of the night. Eat it while it's warm. Comfort food doesn't get any better than this. Quote
C1ay Posted August 17, 2005 Report Posted August 17, 2005 Potato salad is definitely one of my favorites too. I also put chopped bacon in mine. Quote
infamous Posted August 17, 2005 Report Posted August 17, 2005 Potato salad is definitely one of my favorites too. I also put chopped bacon in mine.Absolutely C1ay, got to have those fried bacon bits in the potato salad. When I make chili, I also like to add those bacon bits to the recipe. My home made chili recipe is out of this world and I guard it's secret with a passion. I'll need to hear a lot of begging before I turn loose of this recipe. In any case, the next time you make your own brand of chili, try adding those bacon bits, the taste will knock your socks off. Quote

IrishEyes Posted November 27, 2005 Report Posted November 27, 2005 You didn't give us your recipie for it, Infy...Are you of the Cincy persuasion, and prefer your beans with noodles? Or do you prefer it like the Texans, sweat-popping hot?Or do you like yours on the calmer side, lots of flavor, but hold the fire? Me? I prefer mine with Peanut Butter. That's right! I need a huge spoonful of good ol Jif mixed in with mine. It changes the color, and makes it really smooth. Of course, it also has to be served in a deep bowl, with a warm tortilla lining the bowl, and garnished with shredded cheddar and some onions as well. Quote
