I tend toward thinking that the Patty Hearst example isn't applicable.

 

I'm here to learn from this thread topic but I also believe that some instances could have a lot to do with the 'captives', assuming that they are such, haven't become sympathetic toward the cause of their captors. That likely wouldln't be the case with Patty because she was already sympathetic to her cohorts.
