motherengine Posted September 5, 2005 Report Posted September 5, 2005 again, not sure where to post this but here goes: i have been thinking about accents (and differances in language) in the human animal kingdom and how they evolved. the idea came to me while contemplating this: has anyone done research on accents in other animal communities, say dolphins? Tormod Posted September 5, 2005 Report Posted September 5, 2005 A quick google search turned up this: Orca vocalizations include clicks used in echolocation, whistles, and scream-like pulses. The sounds are used to communicate with other orcas, for mating purposes, and for locating prey. Different pods (long-lasting groups of orcas) have distinctive "accents" and can recognize members by this accent. http://www.enchantedlearning.com/subjects/whales/species/Orca.shtml Quote
