ck27 Posted May 29, 2006 Report Posted May 29, 2006 Ived always wondered like how our universe is formed with all the galaxies moving away if that might be like 100's of billions of universes circling around each other, something weird like that. Like a huge multi universe thing. Quote
Harry Costas Posted May 30, 2006 Report Posted May 30, 2006 Hello All How do you know that galaxies are moving away? Are they or is it just the universe is not expanding as some cosmologist maybe saying. see link http://astro.uwaterloo.ca/~mjhudson/research/threed/ Each super cluster of galaxies behaves as a unit and no need to move away. Our milky way belongs to a small cluster of some 35 galaxies or so with M87 super galaxy as its centre and is moving towards the centre of a larger cluster called the virgo. http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap951113.html Pictured are several galaxies of the Virgo Cluster, the closest cluster of galaxies to the Milky Way. The Virgo Cluster spans more than 5 degrees on the sky - about 10 times the angle made by a full Moon. It contains over 100 galaxies of many types - including spirals, ellipticals, and irregular galaxies. The Virgo Cluster is so massive that it is noticeably pulling our Galaxy toward it. more info on clusters http://archive.ncsa.uiuc.edu/Cyberia/Cosmos/GtAttractor.html http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap960218.html http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap960405.htmlhttp://chandra.harvard.edu/xray_sources/galaxy_clusters.html Quote
Eclogite Posted June 5, 2006 Report Posted June 5, 2006 How do you know that galaxies are moving away?Red shift. Please refute this in your own words, not by reference to links. Please use the links to substantiate your position, not to express it. Thank you in advance. Quote
