3 people would have to go. first stops after 1 day gives 2nd and 3rd guy 1 extra days food, now the 2nd guy stops the next day (2days in) gives 3rd 1 day worth of food and heads back, 3rd is now 2days in with 4days worth of food, can make it alone.

Incredibly close, but not quite... they can only carry four each.

EDIT: It is three, but your reasoning was off. Try again. :thumbs_up

my reasoning is fine..

end of first day

1:3days ration

2:3days ration

3:3days ration

first gives 1 to 2 and 1 to 3

1:1days ration - enough to get back home

2:4days ration

3:4days ration

end of second day

2:3days ration

3:3days ration

second gives 1 to third

2:2days ration - enough to get home

3:4days ration - enough to complete journey.

You are about to go on a journey which will take 6 days. The maximum amount of food one can carry is for 4 days. How many people total would need to go for you to make it to your destination without starving, and how?

(Note: Each must survive)

According to your logic, they started with a total of 9. The first night, they each eat, leaving them with 6 total (2 each). The first guy gives 1 day's food to each of the other two, leaving him with zero to get home.

2:4days ration

3:4days ration

end of second day

2:3days ration

3:3days ration

Following the above, your numbers are off. They would be starting the second day with 3 each, not 4...

However, you're totally on the right track, so I'll answer it.

Three people start off with 4 days food each.

The first night they stop, and everyone eats some of Guy#3's food, leaving him with one to get home.

The second day, the two that are left each eat from Guy#2's food, leaving him with 2 to get home for his two day journey.

Now, they are 2 days into a 6 day trip, leaving four more days to travel for Guy#1 to reach his destination, and he still has his 4 days worth of food. :)

Does that work in math class too?

Nevermind, I know what I mean. Next question.

Just teasing ya a bit, Jay-qu. My opportunities to do so are few, and far between.

No answers yet to this one?

Which state is surrounded by the most water?

Well... that wasn't quite what I was going for, but I cannot deny it might be true. :eek2:

Let me ask it differently:

What USA state is surrounded by the most water?

Mmmm...if you say 'surrounded' I think Michigan, but if we say 'bounded' I think California.B)

Uhm...Illinois?

Little help here:eek_big:

Let's summarize:

First guess:

MICHIGAN

Second guess:

CALIFORNIA

Third guess:

TEXAS

Fourth guess:

FLORIDA

Fifth guess:

ILLINOIS

Does that help? B)

I was looking for help from the other members silly, not you! Let's go with Alaska (longest coastline!?) & Hawaii (surrounded by the 'most' water!?):eek2:
