Vmedvil Posted March 2, 2023 Report Posted March 2, 2023 It seems the USPS to purcahse 9,000 electric vehicles and install 14,000 charging stations, read more at https://thehill.com/policy/energy-environment/3879040-usps-to-purchase-9000-electric-vehicles-install-14000-charging-stations/ Do you think it is a smart idea for the USPS to purchase 9,000 electric vehicles? Halc Posted March 6, 2023 Report Posted March 6, 2023 Almost anything is better than the straight gasoline powered vehicles they use now. Delivery vehicles don't travel too far, so battery capacity is probably less of a problem than it is for a private user. On the other hand, I would have thought that given their driving habits (stops every few seconds), a mechanical hybrid drive (compressed nitrogen or maybe flywheel) would be optimal. Problem is there, nobody mass produces such a thing, so the electric is probably the next best thing. Quote
Moontanman Posted March 7, 2023 Report Posted March 7, 2023 IMHO, the only real problem with electric vehicles is long distant travel. I seldom put more than 25 miles on my vehicle a day, usually less than 5, but when I travel I routinely drive as much as 500 miles. In the USA travel times between cities is often measured in several hours if not days, once they build electric cars that have that kind of range the gasoline engine is doomed. Quote
