MortenS Posted October 20, 2005 Report Posted October 20, 2005 Here is a pretty straightforward procedure you can do in your kitchen, that does not require any expensive equipment. http://gslc.genetics.utah.edu/units/activities/extraction/ Quote
learnin to learn Posted October 21, 2005 Author Report Posted October 21, 2005 Thanks for your help!!!! do you have any advice on how to seperate cells from other cells... example isolating specific organisms found in pond water from other organisms Quote
MortenS Posted October 22, 2005 Report Posted October 22, 2005 I am sorry, I have much experience in sorting insects, but not much (close to nothing) in sorting minute water-living micro-organisms. I guess the method will depend on what sort(s) of organism you want extracted from your sample. Here are some guesses: If they differ in size, there is allways filters you can use to separate the different sizes. If they differ in weight, it might also be possible to sort them after weight by using a high velocity centrifuge It will probably not be enough to sort them in different species though. Maybe there exists methods that utilize their biology, so that they sort themselves? For bacteria, you can grow them on different substrates, specifically tailored for the bacteria you are interested in. Quote
