No. the thing that makes us think light can travel for years is the notion of conservation of energy. and you probably also need compactness of space (which means as much that there are no "holes" in spacetime).

hmm, thanks bo. that sounds purty good. i'm starting to see light year as being possible.

fear not i shall remain skeptical. a light bulb one light year away would be sweet :)

I think you have this false idea about scientists. It seems that you think when one scientist says something, other scientists say "Hey, we gotta support this guy, he's a scientist". That's actually the opposite, whenever someone comes up with a theory, other scientists are very sceptical and they try to disprove it. This is different than you are used to in the religious community where the opposite happens. A preacher says something and everyone is afraid to question what he says.
