Harriet the giant tortoise celebrated its 175th birthday yesterday with no sign of slowing down. Not that it is easy to tell. Even in the first flush of youth Galapagos tortoises manage only a steady plod.

 

Hatched in 1830 and acclaimed by the Guinness Book of Records as the world's oldest living animal, Harriet was reputedly collected from the Galapagos islands by Charles Darwin.
