What's the insulating in houses made out of?

depends on the house: Some old ones have chips of wood or newspaper (very inefficient), even asbestous was used and is sometimes still in the walls.

Newer houses use fiberglass bundles or foam panels, some areas have 'spray foam' shot in to insulate it. Most of the new stuff has a R rating, like R-20 for 4" fiberglass, or R-30 for 6".

my house is insulated with sheep wool. For insulation of a container, polystyrene foam is pretty good.
