As of this post we have 9 replies to the poll. 125 views, only 9 votes......hmmmm, it seems a simple question. It doesn't require much thought. Don't most people know if they are left, right or ambidextrous? I speculated that there is proportionately more intelligent people in this forum, all science forums for that matter, than in the general population. The poll results are too small to be of much value, however the data is consistent with left handed and ambidextrous people being more inclined to be of above average intelligence. Five right handed, two left handed and two ambidextrous people responded. 56% right and 44% left and ambi', Quite impressive considering the overall percentage of lefty's is 10% There is alot of information on this subject on the web, however it is very contradictory. Oddly, the people doing the studies never disclose their handedness, which to me would bias alot of data. One interesting thing I've read is that the corpus collossum is very often 11% larger in lefthanders and ambidextrous people than rightys. Now this appears to be useful data. The corpus collossum is the connective tissue between the left and right hemispheres of the brain. It is what allows the two halves to communicate with each other. It is also what is partially(or completely?) severed in a lobotomy. (I think I can see the scar on Tormods forehead in his picture.Heh Heh) Better communication between the two hemispheres would seem beneficial. Rather than being predisposed to higher intellect, it may be that we(yes, I'm a lefty, slightly ambidextrous.) think differently due to this better interaction. I can't find any data for the size of the corpus collossum in highly intelligent right handers. If they have a larger than average interface I would conclude that the "CC" is of greater importance than whichever hemisphere is dominant. Just to put in my two cents; I love many types of music but have absolutely zero ability. I can't play a single note. I'm artistic and creative in things that you can touch. I love to read. If I'm awake, and not working or fishing, I'm reading something, just no fiction, mostly reference material. I love animals, and even some vicious animals readily form a bond with me. I enjoy to sit outside alone and stargaze and count meteors with a cold sixpack, a good cigar, and have never felt the need for "nipple clamps". Quote

I am just now reading "The Music of the Primes" which is about prime numbers and how mathematicians are trying to solve the Riemann hypothesis. Great book! (My career as a hobby astrologist never took off). And I see that you have started making shorter posts so that you can rack up your post count. Bugger. Tormod Quote

It's summer, traffic is at about 1/5th of the normal average so stop whining. I speculated that there is proportionately more intelligent people in this forum, all science forums for that matter, than in the general population. We did quite all right until around the last week of May when the average forum IQ suddenly dropped by 50%. Dunno why... It is also what is partially(or completely?) severed in a lobotomy. (I think I can see the scar on Tormods forehead in his picture.Heh Heh) Huh? I *did* click the "remove lobotomy scar" button in Photoshop!!! The support guy at Adobe told me exactly how to do it (you just open Word, type "t.o.i.d.i." and then push the big silvery button on the front of the computer). I'll call them back and complain. He's probably right-handed!!! Just to put in my two cents; I love many types of music but have absolutely zero ability. I can't play a single note. Tomorrow is back to work for me so sorry for all this silly posting...need to vent some frustration. I have two more weeks coming up later in July, but the previous two weeks were so miserable (weatherwise) that I feel that I haven't had any vacation at all... Tormod Quote

Tormod Posted July 4, 2004 Report Posted July 4, 2004 Originally posted by: FreethinkerAnd I love to read. I have read at least 10 books in the last year. Science, philosophy, politics mainly. Plus both "Free Inquiry" and "Skeptical Inquirer" mags cover to cover. I did subscribe to Skeptic Magazine but couldn't afford to renew... (lousy excuse but hey I've got kids bla bla). I do subscribe to New Scientist but it comes once a week and I'm about 10 weeks behind now. But I review about 15 popular science books per year for national radio plus I read about twice that, plus about 10-15 science fiction/crime/fiction books. I am usually reading about 2-3 books at a time...I also read lots of magazines - PC Format, Xbox magazine (yup, I own an Xbox but can't afford Skeptic magazine! How's that for priorities!), Computer Music. One of my favorites this year was "The truth behind the Da Vinci Code" written by a Christian who is on the Skeptic society's advisory board or something. Anyway, the book rips Dan Brown's "Da Vinci Code" apart big time. Great fun...and less than 90 pages, too. And I am STILL left handed! Tormod Quote

Oh yeah, Tormod, in case you check this thread before the moderator one... I am volunteering to banish FreeThinker for as long as it takes you to catch up and pass 1,000 posts before him... I saw it right away, I was searching for another member that joined the same week. I'm not above passing the blame off on someone else. I am a bit concerned though, that is the only snide remark without the smiley face. Hmmmm.....? ADDENDUM: OK, here is why I should not let anyone(Irish) rush me to reply. I actually joined in January, we've already established that the times and dates are inaccurate. Reasonable doubt? I think so!! Quote

And when he reaches 0 posts again, he will be sucked into a black hole. We should rename this thread "The midsummer thread".... Tormod Quote

IrishEyes Posted July 5, 2004 Report Posted July 5, 2004 Hah - I mouse right-handedly!!! So do I. I guess that's because I used to smoke left, and I couldn't mouse and smoke at the same time. And of course, smoking was more important!! Since quitting, I was just in the habit of mousing right. Plus, those darn leftie meeses are just not as easy to find ;-) How left handed of you all to gang up against me! Oh, QUIT CRYING!!! LOL!!! Quote
Uncle Martin Posted July 5, 2004 Author Report Posted July 5, 2004 I think lefty's are generally more versatile and adaptive than righty's due to the fact that we must use so many tools that are designed for a right handed world. There are no left handed table saws, one look at my right hand will show you how that works.(just four fingers on that one now) I mouse right handed, probably to accomadate my two pack a day habit. Yeah, I know! The only thing I can't do with my right as well as my left is write. I'd be lucky to make an x with a pen in my right hand. On a positive note; lefty's, while writing, are looking at where they are headed. Righty's are only seeing where they have been. May be that we think that way also. Quote

When he uses PC Anywhere, it passes the mouse button clicks as the default, right handed, assignment. Thus the buttons keep switching based on which window hs is using at the time. Quote
