IrishEyes Posted July 6, 2004 Report Posted July 6, 2004 Poor guy. that's one of the things that i feel fairly lucky about, actually. I can do most things passably well either way, which makes it convenient when eating out, don't have to worry about where I sit. i think this is the thread that Tormod mentioned the warnings he read, targeted to Americans, about the Middle East considering lefties in poor taste. i remember when our ship pulled in to Jebal Ali, in the UAE. We got a LONNNG lecture about what to do and what not to do, how it would offend people if we used our left hands, or showed the soles of our shoes. Also, we had a very strict dress code, women were not allowed to expose anything above their ankles or forearms, basically same for men. Then, we get out in town, and we see all of the other tourists. Evidently, Dubai is quite the shopping mecca for Aussies and many other Europeans. I can still remember my shock at the way the Aussies dressed - VERY immodest, especially considering all of the lecturess about propriety that we got. But the biggest one was about offering your left hand. that applied in the UAE, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Yemen, Egypt, and even Turkey, if I remember correctly. I always wondered what became of naturally left-handed people in those cultures. I still remember that my step-father wanted to break my brother's arm as a baby, when it became apparent that he was a total leftie ( I learned to adapt early!). Can you imagine? If anyone from the Middle East reads this, please let us know what happens to naturally left-handed people in your areas. THAT would be an interesting thing to know. Quote
Crazy Ed Posted July 8, 2004 Report Posted July 8, 2004 I believe that what hand you use is influenced by early age. I used my left hand when young. I guessI wasn't looking at the other kids using thier right hands. I've trained myself to use both now though. As for left handed people being smarter than right handed people, I know that I'm smarter, or have more logic than my right handed friends. Quote
IrishEyes Posted July 8, 2004 Report Posted July 8, 2004 I know that I'm smarter, or have more logic than my right handed friends. And oh so modest too! Welcome, CrazE. Glad to have you in our forums. We all look forward to getting to know you, and are looking forward to being blessed by your logic! Hopefully, you're more organized in your thought patterns than I am, and more open-minded than FreeT is. Either way, good to have you!!! Quote
GAHD Posted July 8, 2004 Report Posted July 8, 2004 Originally posted by: Uncle MartinThere are no left handed table saws, one look at my right hand will show you how that works.(just four fingers on that one now) To alter a table saw to leftie you just need some passable welding skills; take the electic motor and reverse it's table mounts, take the blade lock and reverse it's position. once this has been done the motor now spinns the blade the opposite way, and the lock properly grips the now 'backwards' blade. I sypathise with the finger loss, I almost lost a chunk of my right leg to a band saw; got a nice 4" scar on that thigh just above the knee where the blade caught me after snapping out of the case. :/ I've only been injured where tools break, what happened with the saw? Tormod Posted July 8, 2004 Report Posted July 8, 2004 Neat photo, GAHD. The Canadian finally shows his real face! Tormod Quote

I can't say for sure if it was a left hand problem, probably more carelessness on my part. Even when it is cold, never wear long sleeves when using power tools. I was reaching over the blade to retrieve a board I had just ripped and the blade caught my sleeve. It pulled my hand in so fast that I didn't even realize what had happened until I found a piece of myself under the saw. Live and learn. Just my right little finger, never used it much anyway. Quote
