GAHD Posted February 10, 2006 Report Posted February 10, 2006 So I got a few mysterious popus recently, and I couldn't figure it out for days, but now i got it fixed. Turns out Spammers have found out how to exploit another 'feature' in windoze: microsoft messenger (not MSN). -WiredA quick fix is to turn this service off. Quote
Buffy Posted February 10, 2006 Report Posted February 10, 2006 You turned it on? Shame on you! :hihi: Trillian forever,Buffy Quote

Drip Curl Magic Posted February 10, 2006 Report Posted February 10, 2006 I still have no idea what windows messenger is. I think I asked in a nother thread but didn't get a straight forward answer.... is it like "the original" messenger program... or something? Quote
Tormod Posted February 10, 2006 Report Posted February 10, 2006 Windows messenger is the "default" messenger that comes with Windows. Actually it is "Microsoft Messenger" (windows messenger is a system service that transfers messages within a local network). It is often confused with the new and improved "MSN Messenger", a bloat-ad-mal-ware from Microsoft which is patched more often than my wife's quilts, something which SHOULD have happened to Microsoft Messenger as well but I guess they buried it to make more money from MSN messenger. Get the message now? Choose GAIM! Quote
alexander Posted February 10, 2006 Report Posted February 10, 2006 Lol, i got a good one :hihi:its on the topic of instant messengers, but none discussed here... its about AIMread http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AOL_Instant_Messengerlol, AIM does not only help bring spyware in, it is spyware itself :hihi: .... read, you'll understand if you pay close attention... Drip Curl Magic Posted February 11, 2006 Report Posted February 11, 2006 Get the message now? Choose GAIM! I've been sticking with regular AIM because I've been hearing bad things about GAIM. I had deadAIM for a while and I rather liked the way it was set up. But I lost it when my computer crashed. So, I've been on regular aim for the longest time now. It works, I suppose. :hihi: Quote
alexander Posted February 12, 2006 Report Posted February 12, 2006 you definitely did not follow that link, did you DCM.....? well, gaim supports aim protocol as well as aim, and you can do crazy things like have it automagically change your away messages and include parts from simple text files and what not, one feature that gaim does not support and aim does is relaying all kinds of information about your computer and your internet browsing to aol servers, also it does not support another feature of aim, that is if you send a crazy packet to the aim port, aim opens up a web browser window, that goes to a website specified by the packet.... i guess you can call GAIM and incomplete aim, but for those of us who care even a little bit about our security, AIM is not a way to go, period! (p.s. i've been trying to catch one of those packets, my friend says he's seen one, but forgot to save the scan contents and thus we are still hunting for it, but just imagine how annoying this can get once we do catch it...again....
