When I close my eyes:

 

How is it that man thinks himself proud?

Is it not true that we are but specks,

scattered across this tiny water world

existing tenuously between life and death?

 

From where comes this pride men savor?

Will this universe through eternity passing,

even recognize the minute spark of our time

spent here pondering our own existence?

 

When I close my eyes, all of what I see

reminds me that, for just that short instant,

my senses only register a very small fraction

of the universal music playing out in the cosmos.

 

And when my eyes open, and I look to the stars,

what do I know about those tiny little lights?

Sadly I fear that I understand little more

than when I choose to have them closed.
