Well, just to show us South Africans are not the only users of cast iron cooking containers, some links:

The shape of out potjie however differ from what I have seen elsewhere on the web, as it is round and not flat bottomed. Flat bottomed cast iron pots are however also available here. In fact most of my cooking inside on gas is done with either a mild steel wok or flat bottomed cast iron pots. There is just something about the food's flavor that you do not get with aluminum or SS pots.

 

Would the scientific, culinary members care to speculate why? :eek:
