Turtle Posted March 19, 2006 Author Report Posted March 19, 2006 How about some numismatological trivia? Here goes anyway.:eek2: The ridges on the edges of many coins (called 'rilling') serves no purpose except decoration. Rilling is a throw-back to the olden days of flat-edged gold coins when people would pare away shavings of gold from the edge of every coin they got. :rain: After a while folks gathered enough gold to sell, but with many people doing it the coins shrank to less than the proper size & amount of gold. The rilling was added to reveal any scraping & so stop the practice. :) Quote
