Jay-qu Posted March 15, 2009 Report Posted March 15, 2009 Im planning on coming to america to see the last shuttle launch next year - I will be finished with my degree and going to do some travelling. Quote
Buffy Posted March 15, 2009 Report Posted March 15, 2009 Im planning on coming to america to see the last shuttle launch next year - I will be finished with my degree and going to do some travelling. Plan on spending at least a week in Orlando/Daytona Beach then! :) I've seen one shuttle launch and one landing, both were sheer luck, the launch when a week delay meant the launch just happened to occur the day after a trade show I was at in Orlando and I was staying over to go to Disneyworld...the landing was last year when it just happened to land when the not-so-little-one and I were there on vacation. These things are delayed *most* of the time, so the only way to be sure is to plan on the delay. Unfortunately even that's a crap shoot because the delays can be "let's roll it back into the VAB..." and it'll be another month before it goes off... If you can though, it's truly an unexplainable event. When you're 5 miles away and the air *vibrates* you know it's something that's just plain outside of normal experience... At any rate, good luck! I suggest you gentlemen invent a way to put a square peg in a round hole. Rapidly, :phones:Buffy Quote
modest Posted March 15, 2009 Report Posted March 15, 2009 I actually was wondering at that too, college is usually during the day also in the US no?:phones: Fancy Europeans with your fancy day-time colleges :) ~modest :pirate: Quote

Pyrotex Posted March 16, 2009 Author Report Posted March 16, 2009 Yeah.I missed one of the Saturn V launches, Apollo 12.I forget now why me and my roommates decided not to go. We had the money, the time and the incentive. Somehow we talked ourselves out of it. I wish we hadn't.We didn't know then that we would never have the opportunity again. Quote
TheBigDog Posted March 16, 2009 Report Posted March 16, 2009 I subscribe to the NASA newsletter that tells about the upcoming launch schedules. It includes the rocket launches in addition to the shuttle. I really want to see the shuttle go up, but I will settle for any space shot really. I am going to save my scheckles and take the boys to Florida to see the last shuttle launch. Don't want to let 28+ years of opportunity pass me by. Bill Quote
Moontanman Posted March 16, 2009 Report Posted March 16, 2009 A little OT but last night was a rare night launch of the Space Shuttle, if you drive down to corn cake inlet (you need a real 4X4, not a soccer Mom SUV) you can see the Space Shuttle as it climbs up over the horizon. Even from my stand point it's an impreserve sight. Alas last night it was heavy overcast with rain and you couldn't see a local super nova much less the Space Shuttle. Quote
sanctus Posted March 16, 2009 Report Posted March 16, 2009 Wouldn't the clouds have evaporated right away if the supernova was really local :hihi: Quote

Pyrotex Posted April 17, 2009 Author Report Posted April 17, 2009 WE DID IT! :thumbs_upGwen and I flew to the Boston/DC area, and met Craig Duncan (CraigD) at his favorite pizza parlor near the campus of the University of Maryland. We had a great time!Pictures to follow! Irony: I knew that CraigD and I had a lot in common; we're both programmers. What came out at dinner was that CraigD and my wife have a lot in common; they are both past members in the Society for Creative Anachronism! Small world. Thanks for a super-great evening, Craig. You are a fantastic person and it was an honor to meet you. Quote
Mercedes Benzene Posted April 17, 2009 Report Posted April 17, 2009 WE DID IT! :thumbs_upGwen and I flew to the Boston/DC area, Hmmm. A lot has changed since I've been at college. I completely forgot that they officially incorporated the eastern seaboard into one giant metropolitan region. :) Quote
TheBigDog Posted April 19, 2009 Report Posted April 19, 2009 I went to a reenactment of the Baltimore Tea Party. Quote

You are a fantastic person and it was an honor to meet you.The feeling’s are mutual, Nelson. It’s uncanny how similar the experiences of a couple of folk who’ve been programming for three-ish decades are – though I’m envious of you rocket science work, vs. the present mind-numbing business enhancement project to which I’m presently dedicated. The SCA connection is startling, too.Hmmm. A lot has changed since I've been at college. I completely forgot that they officially incorporated the eastern seaboard into one giant metropolitan region. I went to a reenactment of the Baltimore Tea Party. LOL, all. It’s the Baltimore-Washington greater metro area, of course, and a rather farmish area it still is, between the two cities. The Boston-Washington macro-urb remains at present in the scifi realm, though the rail service between the two, at lease, is good. :QuestionM Quote
