TheFaithfulStone Posted March 3, 2006 Report Posted March 3, 2006 Tell him how much some of the other habits teenagers have cost. In my house I have a Mac G5 (It just freakin' crashed?! Unbelievable!) an older P4-2.0 with FC4, and a WinXP Laptop. Somewhere I have a DOS 5.0 286 that I use as a control system, and two 486DX laptops that I play SimEarth on. Mac is without a doubt my favorite for day to day usage, although I find myself on VNC to the Linux box pretty frequently. I rarely use XP. I think that each operating system has a different philosophy. Linux thinks you should be control of the operating system. Windows thinks the operating system should be in control of you, and Mac thinks the operating system should get out of your way. Unless it's the Finder, in which case it should be haunting your dreams. I find I have to do less "computer crap" with OSX than any other system - either working to subvert it (Windows) or working to make it work (Linux) So, I prefer OSX. TFS Quote

TFS Faithful and Alexander you both make my points beautifully, though at least you Alexander are trying to beat my quotes off with a stick. Quite simply put, if you want to spend hours of time learning and memorizing all the command line language, and moding something to fit just to your liking and needs then by all means Linux is probably the OS for you. If you want far less work for yourself and am willing to pay some one $200 to save yourself hours upon hours of headaches trying to recall all that info (which less face it 90% or more of people around the world simply can't do) then you are going to go with a Mac or a Windows box. That said, if you want to go with a Mac or a Windows box because the apps are canned and much more visually (GUI) oriented and you have thousands to choose from off of the shelf (not downloaded through some bit torrent or file sharing site, even though these types of downloads are completely legit) applications, then take the following two recommendations to heart. 1) A Mac OS and graphical/video/audio editing programs get along a lot better than any reasonably high dollar (sure there are the super high dollar ones) Windows/graphical/video/audio editing system I've ever seen. 2) A Windows OS and business software/video-intensive gaming/Office Suite (like office/lotus/wordpro/appleworks)/network-intensive/cd-burning work slightly better together than any Mac I've ever used (and I've used Macs since back on the old Apple II up through OSX in its many forms) and it will cost you a lot less. As for stability issues. I haven't had any problems with unstable OSs in the past 3 years on either OSX or WinXP, with occasional issues when trying to connect up older hardware that wasn't properly supported by the new OS. So for a generic get on the internet and play games computer 99% of people will go with a Windows PC, the rest are like Alexander who really want to just play with a computer and see what new things he can do (which is actually really cool sometimes, but not for most people who don't have the free time). For a startup video/audio recording and editing station, I'd choose a Mac G4 or G5 with OSX. Quote
InfiniteNow Posted March 3, 2006 Report Posted March 3, 2006 I know the money isn't that much. 5 dollars a month is quite cheap. But how do I convince my father to shell out 5 dollars a month to let his son play games? You might try working for it on your own (mow lawns or babysit or something) and ask your father if he'll match 50% of what you make... i.e. on top of your other earnings... :hihi: Quote
ingannilo Posted March 5, 2006 Report Posted March 5, 2006 If you need something that'll boot every day, and is a critical tool for making money/supporting family/maintaining lifestyle, shoot for a mac. If it's personal communication, browsing, light gaming, and randomness, windows has more compatable software than any other OS, and that's gonna be your best friend. If it's genuine computing efficiency you're out for, and you have no problems spending days getting software to run you need to meet Free BSD. Having done on site computer repair for a small company in florida for about a year, I came to know windows systems pretty well. People complain about the bloat of XP, but I can get my system to run, communicate and do everything I want out of it with a total of five process' running. http://www.sysinternals.com/blog/2005/07/running-windows-with-no-services.html but there's lots out there, and macs still take the cake when it comes to manipulating media that you plan to export to other formats. just my opinionsJohn Quote

Drip Curl Magic Posted March 5, 2006 Report Posted March 5, 2006 I wish I had my Mac again. I (my family) got our first computer in 1980. An Atari 800. I learned to program in BASIC, and submitted 3 games to Compute! magazine back when they still printed the code for basic games so you could type it in and run it. haha, right on. I still have an atari 800 today. Along with BASIC. Although, I've never been able to figure BASIC out. Is it supposed to come with a manual with programming codes or something? Quote

alxian Posted March 5, 2006 Report Posted March 5, 2006 i don't like MAC because i'm on a budget, like games, have no interest in programming, and really don't like all the pandering and specious propaganda involved in APPLE products. plus i like building my machines which is i hear harder to do with a MAC. alexander Posted March 6, 2006 Report Posted March 6, 2006 Faithful and Alexander you both make my points beautifully, though at least you Alexander are trying to beat my quotes off with a stick.Apparently the stick i was using was too short ... Look, the point you are making is totally opposite of what i said this entire time, why do you insist that our points are the same is beyond my understaning....Quite simply put, if you want to spend hours of time learning and memorizing all the command line languageLook, i will put this straight to you, if you have missread my previous posts, i hope this will clear it all up: you needn't even know what command line is to run Linux, not what a kernel is, not what an operating system is, nothing, anyone can run linux, even the people who dont know what Linux is! and moding something to fit just to your liking and needs then by all means Linux is probably the OS for you. This is like explaining why US govenment is based on a misreading of Charles de Montesquieu's "Spirit of the Law" to a Bolivian who does not know what USA is. If you want far less work for yourself and am willing to pay some one $200 to save yourself hours upon hours of headaches trying to recall all that info (which less face it 90% or more of people around the world simply can't do) then you are going to go with a Mac or a Windows box.Sad case... Eisenstein, aside from the fact that you get your linux facts from a 1991 linux journal, you also forget to mention the amount of headaches you get by getting windows, the performance hit on the system from windows managers, memory hoging kernel, AV and spyware detection apps running in the background, filesystem fragmentation, constant crashes, and a world of spyware and viruses that run on windows. Applications built into the OS such that you cant remove them, total stupidity of the registry that is designed to hide information from users, IE's tracking files that save any information entered in any text box online, the fact that you need to reboot the OS when you install a piece of software or updates... Do i need to continue, seriously? And OS X is a beautiful OS, just that i dont need the shinyness of the interface and its blocking me from the OS underneeth... That said, if you want to go with a Mac or a Windows box because the apps are canned and much more visually (GUI) oriented and you have thousands to choose from off of the shelf (not downloaded through some bit torrent or file sharing site, even though these types of downloads are completely legit)Have you been reading the same posts i have? funny because i do not eve recall saying a thing about bittorent or p2p or a file sharing site, infact i dont even know a Linux user that had to use such means of getting a program, dude, please, do the research before throwing this type of crap at an OS...applications, then take the following two recommendations to heart.1) A Mac OS and graphical/video/audio editing programs get along a lot better than any reasonably high dollar (sure there are the super high dollar ones) Windows/graphical/video/audio editing system I've ever seen.2) A Windows OS and business software/video-intensive gaming/Office Suite (like office/lotus/wordpro/appleworks)/network-intensive/cd-burning work slightly better together than any Mac I've ever used (and I've used Macs since back on the old Apple II up through OSX in its many forms) and it will cost you a lot less. As for stability issues. I haven't had any problems with unstable OSs in the past 3 years on either OSX or WinXP, with occasional issues when trying to connect up older hardware that wasn't properly supported by the new OS.and why may i ask does an OS not have backwards compatibility with hardware it supported in the past? exactly, its crap.So for a generic get on the internet and play games computer 99% of people will go with a Windows PC, the rest are like Alexander who really want to just play with a computer and see what new things he can doInfact, for generic people who want to get on the internet and play games a Unix box would be way better then windows, and i use my computers to do tasks not to play with the OS.(which is actually really cool sometimes, but not for most people who don't have the free time)lol dude, you have more time then i do all day long, i work at least 40 hours a week and go to college full time, also i go out stunting (quads, street bikes, super motard bikes, mini bikes, woods riding and snow drifting in the winter) every once in a while, so really not too much time to play the OS game, i need my stuff to work, and it most certainly usually does...For a startup video/audio recording and editing station, I'd choose a Mac G4 or G5 with OSX.Dude i know quite a few DJs that run open-source tools on a Unix box rather then going out and spending 2 gees on a G5 and paying for the soft, oh and most will easily argue with anyone about which one of the three turns out to be a better tool...(scratching, mixing, sequencing, effects, recording, even music writing and visualization software) Pyrotex 1 Quote

Zythryn Posted October 2, 2006 Report Posted October 2, 2006 A properly run PC has very minor chances of security breaches. However, it is still many times more than a Mac. Keep in mind though, if everyone used a Mac the Mac system would be the one getting all the attention from the punks that enjoy causing chaos:doh: Quote

Three of my friends and I hack daily... although we just hack games not actual computers; although I think one of my friends may know a few Black Hat tricks. But I've never seen him do anything of the sort so i cant be sure. As for macs...I would never use one. I grew up with PC's and If everyone moves to a Mac...WELL. More elbow room :hihi:. Quote
