Pret Posted March 3, 2006 Report Posted March 3, 2006 _____Is it okay to talk about exploits, vulnerabilities and stuff like that in this place? I am stuck with my networking project and some help about remote exploits would help a lot. Quote
Buffy Posted March 3, 2006 Report Posted March 3, 2006 1) There are a few people who know such things around here, but their temperment is mostly of the white hat persuasion, and I do not think you will find much response to questions of the form "how do I break into a computer on a network?" 2) Even talking about such topics can easily constitute a violation of either the Digital Millenium Copyright Act or the Patriot Act, and its likely the NSA could track you down in about 10 seconds if you got on their radar. To paraphrase Scott McNealy: there is no freedom of expression anymore: get over it. Or more importantly, do it through a heavy duty anonymizer if you don't want to get flagged by the authorities. 3) There are many hacker sites out there, and we don't want to get into competition with them. These are not people you want to have as enemies. Softly discouraging,Buffy Quote
alexander Posted March 3, 2006 Report Posted March 3, 2006 please you are more then welcome to talk about anything here, freedom of speech and all that Buffy, infact a good exploit talk is something i'm looking forward to, as security is what i love the most in computers. As long as it is not one of those "how do you hack threads", i think you should be ok. And if it is one of these "how do you hack" ones, i can guarantee you some mean and funny responses... Quote
alexander Posted March 3, 2006 Report Posted March 3, 2006 but yes, there are a couple of white hat hackers here, so shoot... Quote
alexander Posted March 3, 2006 Report Posted March 3, 2006 oh and we are here to help students not turn them away, and although the replies may have lots of links to things you need to read, it is for your own good, so you learn something instead of us (the people who can help) solving things for you (students) ... Quote
Buffy Posted March 3, 2006 Report Posted March 3, 2006 Oh okay, I'll not turn my back on hungry minds. But expect mostly the Socratic method from me on this topic: yes its good to be educated, but I feel the same way about this topic as posting information on how to pick locks, build bombs etc. etc. Its nice to know in general terms how easy it is so you can be prepared for the bad guys who do it, but making it easy for script kiddies is like leaving a can of gasoline and book of matches outside your front door: not too wise in my book.... Post away.... Anarchistic communitarianism,Buffy Quote
Boerseun Posted March 3, 2006 Report Posted March 3, 2006 Freedom of expression in jeopardy? Bah! What you need to hack your server, is <CENSORED>. And all you have to do then, is to <CENSORED> the <CENSORED> into the <CENSORED>, using your admin password. Next, you <CENSORED> the IP adress of the server, using <CENSORED> and <CENSORED>. I'd only use that as a last line, and although it does work, it's actually a lot easier to just <CENSORED> with <CENSORED>. Make sure you have the latest release, though. <CENSORED> is a brilliant tool, and <CENSORED> has some more of these mind-numbing exploits on his site, www.<CENSORED>.com There are some good tools at www.<CENSORED>.com as well, but they only specialise in Server 2000 cracks, and seeing as you never told us what OS server you got, the best we can do is to point you in a general direction. But <CENSORED> caters for 99% of OS used in the server market, so should you run into <CENSORED> using <CENSORED>, you'll need some <CENSORED> to go with it. Version 4.1 runs very well. <CENSORED> 'em all, I say. See, Buffy, there's no <CENSORED>ing issues with fre<CENSORED> of exp<CENSORED>. <CENSORED><CENSORED><CENSORED><CENSORED><CENSORED> would of course let me <CENSORED><CENSORED> in a public foru<CENSORED>! Buffy Posted March 3, 2006 Report Posted March 3, 2006 Who the hell's Veronica, by the way?A digression, but since Veronica's friend Mac is a hacker (a girl hacker! just like me!), its not completely off topic: For those of you poor souls outside the US, Veronica Mars is one of the new cult classics, and looks like it might make it past the merger of UPN and WB into next season, and sit tight, as it will probably make it through to one of your local Viacom-affiliated networks. Season 1 (last season) is out on DVD, although prolly still only for Region code 1, so you'll need a hacked player if you order it from Amazon http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000A59PMO/. Brief synopsis: Snarky high school senior private eye solves murders, exposes cad boyfriends and rescues school mascots. Channels Buffy majorly in the black humor quotient. Four stars. Job Bob sez, "check it out." And now back to our regularly scheduled hacking lesson.... "Sometimes a cigar store is just a cigar store,"*Buffy * From Wednesday's rerun Quote
