Matthew Web was first back in 1885, if the source was right;

guess its because I was counting the stars down here in the southern hemisphere - and there is a lot less light polution here which = more stars :xx:

quick question is there actually more stars visible down here or is it purely because of light pollution?

I've been a backyard astronomer for 40+ years. IMO, there are about the same number of stars in N and S hemispheres. And of course, observers at moderate latitudes in each share a great many stars around the celestial equator. Like Orion, which is equally visible to each.

Also, if memory serves me correct, the number 5,000 would be ALL stars above magnitude 6.0 (considered to be the dimmest stars visible with naked eye) for the whole sky, not just N hemisphere. I could be wrong on that one.

I hope I get to see the Southern sky before I die!!!

I'm so reluctant to hear the answer on this... 35%?
I can feel your pain InfiniteNow: 35% is not the correct answer so we now have 6 other alternatives. Just as a side thought; I wonder how many that know that the sun is a star really understand what a star is??

Actually Jay-qu, the answer is 55%. Maybe not as low as many would suspect nor as high as others would guess but never-the-less, lower than it should be...............Infy
